Izzy wrote a check for $720 to pay off a loan. The check was 75% of the money in his checking account. How much was in his account before he wrote the check? How much was in his account after the check was cashed?

Before, I address this question I would like to go over how you could determine the solution for not just this problem but for future ones as well.

In order to determine the solution, you would have to divide the amount by the percentage and multiply by 100 (if there is a decimal), as shown below.

amount [tex] \div [/tex] percent

This not only applies to this word problem but it also applies to regular problems such as what is 25 percent of 75. You would then use the principle which I listed above and determine the solution.

To address your question, in order to determine the amount in his account before the check was cashed, you would simply do 720/75.

You would get 960, this is the amount he had before he wrote the check.

To determine, the amount in his account after he had wrote the check, you would do 960 * .75 and subtract the number you get.

960 - 720 = 240

This number represents the amount he had after the check was cashed.

Thus, the answers are:

Izzy had 960 dollars before he wrote the check.

Izzy has 240 dollars left, after the check was cashed.
