Let Maria = X

Andre = 3x ( 3 times as many as Maria)

Jane = 2(3x) = 6x ( 2 times as many as Andre)


All 3 need to equal 840 pounds:

X + 3x + 6X = 840

Combine like terms:

10X = 840

Divide both sides by 10:

X = 840 / 10

X = 84


Maria = X = 84 pounds

Andre = 3x = 3(84) = 252 pounds

Jane = 6x = 6(84) = 504 pounds


504 + 252 + 84 = 840 pounds.


Andre picked 252 pounds.
