Dry socket is a termed used when a tooth is removed from someones mouth.  Normally a blood clot would form there and promote healing.  Sometimes no clot is formed or it dislodges.  You dont want a dry socket because it impairs healing, and causes pain.
To prevent a dry socket...use good oral hygiene, stop smoking if you do smoke, eat soft foods that don't leave residue in your mouth like popcorn does.  Rest the day of tooth extraction, and no strenuous activity for a few days following.  I also heard that you should avoid using a straw or anything that would cause suction in the mouth.
