Conscience Whigs: The Whig Party was against the Mexican War, but despite the fact of being against it, it voted in favor of funds and supplies to support the army at the war. There was a faction of the party that disagreed with it, it did not support the fighting and did not vote for funds. It divided the party.
Transcendentalists: were against the war and claimed that it caused the destruction of the US. They compared that fighting Mexico for land was “like drinking poison”. This way they defended that people that were against the war should not go fight because they should listen to their conscience and not the government.
Southern expansionists: They were strongly for the war, they tried to convince people with the “Manifest Destiny” that supported the war saying that adding more territory that was pro-slavery would balance the federation with anti-slavery states.
