It was still a largely agrarian land with more a more rural population. However things changed when Samuel Slater copied a British mill design and implemented it in the US for the first time.

This eventually helped to usher in the development of machine-based textile development and gradually introduced industrialization to the US.

Hence, Samuel Slater is known as the 'father of the American Industrial Revolution' while in Britain he is known as 'Slater the Traitor'
