Provoked imitation is a term that refers to a method of assessing the spectacular changes in the brain areas involved in memory that occur during the first two years of life. To assess declarative memory (“the memories”) in pre-verbal children, the investigators use the provoked imitation, where they show an action to babies and give them the opportunity to imitate that action.
With this method it is possible to study the memory of very young children, and to realize that memory improvements with age are consistent with brain development.
