We can find this line at the end of the story ''The Cask of Amontillado'' where Montresor has locked down his enemy Fortunato and it was looking like he was dead because he didn't give any response behind that brick wall where he was.

''But to these words, I hearkened in vain for a reply. I grew impatient. I called aloud -- "Fortunato!" No answer. I called again -- "Fortunato!" No answer still. I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells. ''

After this excerpt, he is saying that his heart grew sick. Fortunato died because of him and this quote is giving the feeling of lack of self-knowledge in the narrator. He is feeling sorry.

He is telling us a justification after he said that his heart grew sick. Dampness of the catacombs? That wasn't the case. Even If Montresor is acting different, we can see in this line that he has emotions and that he is shocked because of what he did to Fortunato but the thing that is missing is perception. Montresor has to accept his emotions.

We can arrive at this answer because:

"The cask of amontillado," tells the story of how Montressor killed Fortunato, trapping him in the walls of the catacombs.

This was because Montressor wanted revenge for something Fortunato had done to him.
This revenge caused Montressor to cultivate dark feelings against Fortunato.

These feelings didn't dissipate even after Montressor concluded his revenge, as he says that his heart has become sick from the dampness of the catacombs.
