A rectangular area is to be fenced in along a straight river bank as illustrated. The length of the fenced-in area is to be 5 feet greater than the width, and the total amount of fencing to be used is 89 feet. Find the width and length of the fenced-in area.

Respuesta :

Answer The lenght is is 24.75 and the width is 19.75

Step-by-step explanation:

The length of the fenced in area will occupy the perimeter of the of the land which is 89 feet, so therefore.

Since perimeter of a rectangle is

2L + 2W

2L + 2W= 89.......... eqn 1

and Since L is 5 ft greater than  W

L= W+5......... eqn 2

Substituting eqn 2 to eqn 1

2 ( W+5) + 2W =89

2W + 10+ 2W= 89

4W+10= 89

4W = 89-10= 79

W= 79/4

W= 17.75

From eqn 2.     L = W+ 5

L= 17.75+ 5

L= 24.75.
