Brown v. Board of Education rendered the prior case, Plessy v. Ferguson, invalid. Decided in 1896, Plessy v. Ferguson had upheld racial segregation based on the idea of "separate but equal." Brown v. Board of Education held that separate was not equal, and that schools must be desegregated.
