Answer:
The Tet Offensive launched by the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army against American and South Vietnamese troops in more than 100 places in South Vietnam on New Year´s Day (lunar calendar, January 31) in 1968 took them by surprise.
Communist troops got control of some towns and cities, including Hue, a major, historical city in central Vietnam. Even Saigon was attacked and a battled raged on in the South Vietnamese capital. But after a few days, Americans and their allies started to push the North Vietnamese back. The Tet Offensive was a military failure for the guerrillas, but it was a big political and PR success.
The intrepid attacks on American bases and personnel had a great impact on the US public opinion; TV images and news events suddenly showed how crude, chaotic and violent the conflict was and that reality contradicted the public assurances of US officials about the progress in the war. The public got the firm impression that the war would go on for a long time, both public and government officials realized it could not be won. The massive pacifist movement got strengthened by the events in Vietnam and more people joined it, leading to large demonstrations in US cities.
