Ok so lets say you had 1/4 and 2/4 that would be 3/4.
But lets say you had different denominators, so look at Picture 1
You would have to change the denominator so that its the same on both sides. So in THIS case, it would be 4. Because 4 is in the 2 times table. Ok? I will come back to the denominator thing, but basically when you have both the denominators the same, you have 1/4 + 1/2 so BASICALLY if you find it hard to understand, just literally multiply the arrows in red. And so 1 multiplied by 2 = 2. And 1 multiplied by 4 = 4 So then you just add 4+2 (the numerators) and you get 6! yay!
But basically it's 6/4 and technically the numerator (at the top) cannot be bigger than the denominator ) at the bottom) so you would do 6 MINUS 4 Which is 2. Basically it is basically asking you how many times does 4 go into 6. And how many times is that? ONCE! So then the answer would be what I circled in red. And that my friend, is called a MIXED FRACTION
YOU ALSO DO THE SAME FOR SUBTRACTING, BUT AFTER YOU DO THE DENOMINATOR, JUST SUBTRACT INSTEAD OF ADDING.
A mixed fraction is when you have a whole, as in 1 2/4
And an IMPROPER fraction is 6/4 (like we did before) as in the numerator is bigger than the denominator. Be careful in tests cuz they might ask you to change it into an improper or mixed fraction.
I really do hope this helps you, and you can ask me any other questions about this topic!
