Aphrodite was given Hephaestus' hand in marriage so as to not anger the other gods.
If another god was married to Aphrodite, they would be able to hold the title of most handsome, so by giving her hand to Hephaestus, the least handsome of the major gods, Zeus avoided any (more) fighting among the gods.
