If he spent 2.25 hours/135 minutes on his french homework and 25 minutes longer than 135 minutes on math homework, he spent 160 minutes on math homework (or you could write it 2.66667 hours)

The time spent doing the maths assignment is 1 hour 20 minutes.

Simultaneous equations

Two equations can be derived from the question:

m - f = 25 minutes equation 1

m + f = 135 minutes equation 2

Where:

m = time spent doing maths assignment

f = = time spent doing French assignment

Determining the time used to do the maths assignment

In order to determine the value of m, add equation 1 and 2 together

2m = 160

Divide both sides by 2

m = 80 minutes

m =  1 hour 20 minutes
