In ovulation, after expelling the oocyte the follicle becomes a corpus luteum and secretes estrogen and progesterone.
The luteal phase starts after ovulation. The reason it is known as the luteal phase is that the corpus luteum, a new endocrine organ, develops from the ruptured follicle that produced the egg.
The hormone progesterone is created in the corpus luteum. The uterine lining needs progesterone to develop and become supportive for the implantation of an embryo. Once implantation has taken place, progesterone is also required to maintain an early pregnancy.
If pregnancy develops, progesterone levels remain high while the uterine lining is preserved. In the absence of pregnancy, progesterone levels fall, causing the endometrial lining to shed and the start of the subsequent menstrual cycle.
