The thymus gland a primary lymphoid organ is an important part of immune system as T cells develop in the thymus. The cells of the adaptive immune system are lymphocytes B cells and T cells. As adaptive immune system depends on T cell and innate immune system, one cannot function properly and constantly get sick from bacteria or viruses infection, if born without it.
Removal of the thymus at later stages of life has no significant effect on immunity because enough T-cells are generated during fetal stage, i.e. before birth.
