The Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw tribes, together known as the "Five Civilized Tribes," were forcibly expelled from their ancient homelands in the Southeastern United States and relocated to regions designated west of the Mississippi River.
