Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. The differnce between velocity and speed is that velocity includes direction while speed does not. Acceleration can occur when velocity or direction changes. It also occurs when both changes. If a car is not speeding up, it means that the speed is constant. But if there is a change in direction which causes the velocity to change in either the x or y axis, then there could be acceleration.
