The major European colonial powers begin to use shortwave radios in the 1920s as a communication link to their various International colonies.
Radio transmission over shortwave (SW) wavelengths is known as shortwave radio. Although the band has no set definition, it always encompasses the entire high frequency band (HF), which runs from 3 to 30 MHz (100 to 10 metres); above the medium frequency band (MF); and below the VHF band. Its low frequencies produce waves that can travel great distances and skip off the ionosphere with ease and efficiency. Before the 1920s, shortwave frequencies over 1.5 MHz were reserved for amateur use since they were thought to be ineffective for long-distance communication. In the 1920s, shortwave communications saw a tremendous expansion. Shortwave had replaced transoceanic cables and longwave wireless services for more than half of long-distance communications by 1928, and its overall volume had greatly expanded. Compared to large-scale longwave wireless installations, shortwave stations were more economical and efficient.
