In China’s civil war, the United States backed the Nationalists, led by Jiang Jieshi.
The United States aided the nationalists with surpluses of their military supplies worth hundreds of millions of dollars and with the generous loan of hundreds of millions in military equipment.
After 1950, the United States did not show any great interest in artificially supporting Chiang Kai-shek's government in its final state. The situation changed completely in the wake of the invasion of South Korea by North Korean troops in June 1950, leading to the Korean War. In those circumstances it was considered politically unfeasible in the United States to allow a communist victory over the KMT. US President Harry S. Truman ordered the Seventh Fleet of the United States to avoid any possible communist invasion of Taiwan.
