Henry Cabot Lodge believed in the gold strategy or the standard of backing up paper currency with gold. He considered that the League posed a threat to the United States' isolationist foreign policy, and he wanted the treaty to contain Congress's constitutional prerogative to declare war.
The Republican Henry Cabot Lodge refuses to ratify the League of Nations or the League of Nations because:
- Lodge saw the League as a supranational organization that would limit the American government's ability to control its own affairs.
- Others thought the League was the kind of tangled association that the US had avoided since George Washington's Farewell Address.
- The covenant would force the United States to intervene when other countries' security was jeopardized.
