The correct answer is A) They succeeded in overthrowing the French colonial government, but failed to established a strong economy.
After the WWII an anti-colonialist feeling started to grow in Algeria. Many Algerian military officers that collaborated to free France from German occupation were frustrated for the treatment they received from the metropolis. An incipient Algerian nationalism was on the rise after the war, which caused France to respond with a disproportional repress in many cities, towns, and villages with thousands of victims. The war for independence started in 1954 and finished in 1962 with the Evian Accords, by which France recognized the independence of Algeria. The independence produced a massive exodus of European citizens that left Algeria and with them Algeria lost most of its bureaucrats, managers, businessmen, and technicians. Most of the Algerian population was uneducated, the country's economy became dependent on oil, and the new government became increasingly socialist and authoritative. For these reasons, it was very hard for a peripheral country as Algeria to establish a strong economy.
