because it freezes the energy or oil that is inside it so it doesn't run out or uses up other energy

Answer:

Some batteries self discharge if kept at room temperature or higher temperature. NiMH and NiCD batteries tend to loose their charge.

Storing them at lower temperature will increase their shelf life by lowering their discharge rate dramatically.

Some of the batteries retain 90% of their charge for a month so it is better to sore the NiMH batteries in freeze and bring them back to normal temperature before using it.
