Read the excerpt below and answer the question.

Summer was on the way; Jem and I awaited it with impatience. Summer was our best season; it was sleeping on the back screened porch in cots, or trying to sleep in the treehouse; summer was everything good to eat; it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape; but most of all, summer was Dill. (Lee 34)

How would you describe the tone in the excerpt above? What impact does the tone have on the meaning of the passage?

the tone is joyful/awaiting of good things to come. the tone impacts the meaning of the passage in that the reader realising that Scout cannot wait for Dill to come as they have fun together.

The tone of this excerpt from To Kill A Mockingbird is joyful and relaxing because it is the description of summer. The writer uses metaphors in the narrative of Scout in the examples of it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape and summer was Dill. Dill is the summertime friend of both Scout and Jem who visits Maycomb every summer.
