The first mistake is adding like terms on the left side of the equal sign.

8x + 2 - 5x

-5x and 8x are like terms. When combined it equals 3x not 13x.

Then you will continue on with the problem.

8x + 2 -5x = 3(-x - 1)
3x + 2 = -3x - 3
-2 -2
3x = -3x - 5
-3x -3x
-x = -5
-x -x

x = 5

For the first equation the overall mistake was adding 5x to 8x and -5x then everything from there is wrong. The correct way to solve this equation is :

8x+2-5x=3(-x-1)

Step 1: simplify both sides of the equation

8x+2+(-5x)=(3)(-x)+(3)(-1)     Distribute

8x+2+(-5x)= -3x+(-3)

Step 2: combine like terms

(8x+(-5x) +(2)= -3x-3

3x+2=-3x-3

Step 3: add 3x to both sides

3x+2+3x=-3x-3+3x

6x+2=-3

Step 4: subtract 2 from both sides

6x+2-2= -3-2

6x=-5

Step 5: divide both sides by 6

6x/6= -5/6

x= -5/6 or -0.83 (the three is repeating)
