Romanticism may best be defined as a type of artistic movement from the late 18th century until the mid to late 19th century. It focuses with a certain glorification and strong emotional attachment to nature, the human condition, and certain events that leave a reaction of awe or imaginative escape for the consumer. By the middle of the 19th century, Realism began to replace Romanticism, with artists criticizing Romanticism for its failure of depicting the truth to contemporary life and events accurately. Realism focused on the literal depictions of daily life during the Industrial and Scientific Revolution, both dominating the western culture of the 19th century.
By the mid-nineteenth century, several global political and social movements popularized the concept of Realism, which slowly replaced Romanticism. Romanticism was a social and cultural movement that characterized much of the late eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century. Romanticism required an escape from reality, and the artist provided the people space, where they would escape to, to get a moment’s freedom from the daily drudgeries of life. Romanticism required the creation of an imaginary world, where a man could leave behind his troubles temporarily, and seek a moment’s salvation.
