Amphibians begin their life cycle in the water before developing the characteristics necessary to live on land. All amphibians require freshwater environments in order to lay eggs. Larval amphibians that hatch from these eggs have gills to obtain oxygen from the water, as well as a long tail used for swimming. Over time, the amphibian larvae will undergo metamorphosis and develop lungs as well as legs and transition to life on land.
