When Farmers and ranchers eliminated many prairie dogs because their underground complexes were destructive to fields, the black-footed ferret were nearly wiped out. The disappearance of ferrets was also due to factors like plague and canine distemper, that drove the ferrets to near extinction. But then some animals were captured in the wild to begin a captive breeding program to reintroduce ferrets in western habitat.
