After gaining their freedom, many were opposed to a strong national government. To avoid any one person having too much power, which could lead to a dictatorship, the Articles gave the majority of the power to the states. However, later on they learned that the Articles actually weakened the country as a whole. (That’s when the Declaration was proposed)
